About VITAL

Why VITAL ?

A VITAL step towards clean, quiet aero-engines

VITAL is a European research & technology programme which aims to reduce aircraft engine noise and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. It brings together a large number of stakeholders in the European aviation industry, including all major engine manufacturers, Airbus and equipment-makers, as well as innovative small businesses, universities and research centers. VITAL is budgeted at 90.9 million euros, with half financed by the European Commission.

Programme start: January 1, 2005
Term: 4 years
53 partners
Programme coordinator: Snecma

Ambitious objectives
The aim of VITAL is to develop engine technologies that reduce noise by 6 decibels and CO2 emissions by 7%. These ambitious goals can only be achieved through significant technological breakthroughs.

At the same time, VITAL aims to develop innovative technical solutions to reduce the engine’s weight, thereby reducing both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The partners in VITAL are focusing their research efforts exclusively on the low-pressure section of the engine, which will be tested independently.

In addition to their quantitative objectives, the partners in VITAL have several more general goals:

Bolster European aeronautical research & technology partnerships.
