Questions and answers about VITAL project

Question: What is the VITAL programme (What, When, Why, Who)?
VITAL is a four-year R&T programme with 52 partners consortium, lead by Snecma, including all major European engine manufacturers under – Rolls-Royce Plc, Volvo Aero, MTU Aero Engines, ITP, Avio, Techspace Aero and Rolls-Royce Deutschland – and Airbus. This integrated European Commission programme, reflecting and continuing aero engine manufacturer’s Research & Technology efforts over the last few years to develop environmentally friendly technologies. Technology breakthroughs are required to reduce aircraft engine noise by 6 dB and CO2 emissions by 7 %, which are the goals settled for the achievement of the program.

Question : What it is the aim of the VITAL programme ?
The aim is to achieve a very high bypass ratio engine that can meet noise and specific fuel consumption goals on ACARE without the penalties of drag and weight normally associated with a low specific thrust engine. By 2008, VITAL should be able to validate technologies enabling a 6 dB decrease in noise and a 7 % reduction in CO2 emissions.

Question: Will you achieve to meet the ACARE’s ambitious objectives?
The aim of VITAL to contribute to the ACARE’s noise and CO2 emission reduction objectives but all these objectives will not been reach only by VITAL itself’. This programme is tasked with achieving the technological breakthrough needed to move progress to higher plane. In conjunction with similar European research programmes like SILENCE or EEFEA this will bring us reach of our goal.

What is the organization of the VITAL programme?
The VITAL programme is organized in seven major technical subprojects, each including activities under the direction of the different partners. Snecma is coordinating the project with the help of a Management Committee and a Steering Committee.
