VITAL project director
Description and objectives of the VITAL project with Jean-Jacques Korsia, VITAL project director.
How would you describe the VITAL programme?
VITAL is a European environmental research programme. Its main objective is to reduce aircraft engine noise and CO2 emissions at a cost that is acceptable to the market. The programme was launched in January 2005 and will run for four years. Snecma is coordinating this programme, which involves 52 partners from 14 countries including Rolls-Royce Plc, MTU, ITP, Avio, Techspace Aero, Volvo, Rolls-Royce Deutschland and many more.
In practical terms, what are the objectives?
The aim is to reduce CO2 emissions by 7% and aircraft engine noise by 6 decibels. To reach these ambitious objectives, technology breakthroughs are evaluated through three main architectures: the Direct Drive Turbo Fan, the Geared Turbo Fan and the Contra Rotating Turbo Fan.
